THE UNCENTER

A Center for Empathy without Borders

Thank you for calling. I want to help explain why I do the work I do even when acknowledging racism and xenophobia in the workplace.

One may ask, why do I remain in healthcare while I am enduring all these racism? My answer, since I work mostly with geriatrics, I see them as my parents who live thousands of miles aways from me. Since I am not present to physically provide the care they need, it is my way to provide that care to people around me. As the golden rule goes, “do unto others what you wish them to do unto you.” On the field, I do not see race but I see humans who need my care. If I genuinely provide the care or the smile they need, maybe, someone will also extend that love to my parents, kids, and loved ones. And, as I always say, EMPATHY should be a human trait not an option. Our listeners can respond genuinely by just saying “I am sorry this happened to you.” When you see me crying, just sit with me and offer me a Kleenex to wipe my tears. Sometimes, all I need is a hug and tell me that you care.

Thank you for listening.
