Narrative 6

THE UNCENTER

A Center for Empathy without Borders

Thank you for calling. I have experienced racism and xenophobia in the workplace that has made it difficult for me to do my job. You could see this story as one that results when a person thinks “I do not want to deal with the black supervisor.”

One Saturday afternoon, A son visited his father at the personal care facility that I worked at. He had questions so he requested to talk to the supervisor.

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) notified me so I went. The son, without responding to my greetings proceeded and stated “I asked to talk to the supervisor, is she here?” I responded by saying, hello. . . I am the supervisor, how may I assist you? With his hands in his pocket and unhappy facial expression, he stated, “well, is there anyone else or a manager that I can talk to? I emphasize to the son that there is no manager here today until Monday, I am the supervisor and will assist you the best I can. The son decided that he did not need my help yet he went to my white CNA to ask her some questions after I left the room. I sent an email to my manager regarding what has happened but no follow up was done.

These experiences are complicated to explain. Thank you for listening.
