Responding to the Nurse’s Stories

THE UNCENTER

A Center for Empathy without Borders

One thing to be aware of in responding to the narratives you hear is an inclination you might have to explain (for yourself or for the nurses who have shared their stories) the intent of someone who has acted or spoken in a racist or xenophobic way, rather than focusing on the impact of the behavior or words. However, rationalizing discrimination diminishes the significance of what a person has endured.

When engaging with the stories in our Empathy Lab, it’s important to center your responses on the experiences and feelings of the nurses. This focus on impact over intent allows will allow you to honor the truth what they have experienced.

Below are some guided responses we encourage you to use in responding to the nurses’ narratives. Please note that the responses at this stage of the lab will not be recorded and represent an opportunity to practice responding in an empathic way (you will have an opportunity later in the lab to offer your personal response). These responses are crafted to ensure that:

Once you have listened to your first narrative, use one of the following prompts or combine them or use them as inspiration to leave a reply.

  • I’ve listened deeply to your story, and I want to acknowledge the injustice you’ve faced.  Your experience matters, and you are not alone. Let’s explore support options together, and I’ll ensure you’re connected with someone who can help.”
  • Thank you for trusting us with your story. I hear the pain in your words, and I am moved by your courage. I want you to know that I stand with you and am committed to supporting you. Please let me know if you’d like my help in connecting you with resources for further care.”
